Lunch Bag Friday: Dead Man's Party

Happy Lunch Bag Friday!  We kinda get into Halloween around here... just a bit.   We don't really like to wait until October to start celebrating and neither do our lunch sacks.  :)   Oingo Boingo's song "Dead Man's Party" was the inspiration behind this deadly lunch bag duo.  A week ago our youngest begged and begged to have our family watch "Monster House" one night after decorating for Halloween.  She felt like watching something Halloweeny and was proud that her daddy helped animate that movie back in 2006.  We warned her over and over it was probably too scary, but finally we caved to her pleadings.  Sure enough she was freaked out and got after her daddy for sometimes animating scary movies.  hahahaha   (fyi- She's fine now, by the end she liked it).

For fun I thought I'd share some of our Halloween decorations this year that we have up so far....

Witch's Brew in the fireplace.  I loved our daughter's idea to put lights in the cauldron to look like it was hot and boiling.

Front Entry way.  The kids love to play and decorate with that huge, hairy spider and put him in different places- so it feels like he wanders around the house when we aren't looking.  For now, he's guarding the stairs and admire the little Halloween silhouettes I made of our family this last week.  :)

Close ups of our silhouettes I made.  They were a lot of fun.

Family Room-  I love sewing and that dress in the corner was my oldest daughter's Halloween vampire costume she helped me sew last year.  I also designed and made the little felt advent calendar countdown to Halloween on the right side of the photo.

The real beauty in all of our decor is the family painting that Seth made of us a few years ago.  We love it so much we just keep it up year round!  :)

Top of entertainment center.  These Disney BigFigs have a place in our home year round too.   hehe

Our girls like animating like their daddy.  Nothing like some spooky decor to inspire a little stop-motion animation.  They are currently saving up for an ipod to create much better animation than their 3ds, but they still have fun.  They did this bit last Sunday and they figured out all on their own how to make it look like she was flying.  We were so proud.  :)

Well Happy Haunting this next month!  Enjoy the fall and think of us.  :)  More spooky lunch sacks to come!

The Winning Bag!

This is the bag Seth drew for the winner of our contest that we had on our facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/whizbangbags.  When we contacted Kori (the winner) she said that it would be tough to narrow down one funny story because she has four kids (I guess she doesn't play favorites lol), but said that she loved elephants... so this is what Seth came up with.

We know Kori from church so Seth thought it would be fun to reference the writings of Paul to the to Philippians (Philippians 4) also one of our articles of faith (number 13). It's a funny saying that Seth and I always say when we are talking about that particular Article of Faith (the real words are "We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent...). Kind of like a hymn that we sing in church that we changed the words to "High on a Mountain Top, a badger chased a squirrel" instead of "a banner is unfurled" or "I Am a Child of God... with parents kind of weird" instead of "with parents kind and dear" or my personal favorite from Primary which Seth believed were the words for many many years "Give Seth the Little String" instead of "Give Said the Little Stream". We haven't been struck by lightning yet.  (knock on wood)

Well Kori, you didn't have to play favorites, he threw the whole family in! I think it's fabulous! He's never turned a bag sideways for the design. It's very charming.  We'll pass it along to you soon.

Congrats again on winning! We'll have to do this contest again soon! In the meantime, only one more day until new "Lunch Bag Friday" drawings are posted. He was sketching out fun ideas last night.  Please share this site with your friends and family. We'd love to get a big enough fan base of people following the page to be taken more seriously by book publishers or companies that could print these sacks.

Monster of Frankenstein and His Bride

Well even though it's not October yet... we have been decorating for Halloween.  :)  It's one of my favorite times of the year!  I'm creating some Halloween silhouettes of our family for the staircase.  Seth and I will be this couple.  :)  He drew these bags in Oct. of 2011

Best Friends

There's something so charming about this bag that Seth drew in 2012 for Kendyl.  So sweet.  I sure hope his buddy is ok...

Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel

Seth drew this lunch bag duo Fall of 2012.  I LOVE it!  I love the story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman…. even more I love the history behind the story.  We use to live just a few miles from the Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow, NY where Washington Irving sang in a choir as a boy and is buried on the grounds of that church. I use to go there weekly and just wander around.  There was another old man there named Bill that would “haunt” the place as well and would give me little histories lessons.  For Halloween this year one of my daughters wants to be Katrina Van Tassel.  Seth is excited now about the idea of being the Headless Horseman.  I’ll need to see about finding a huge suit to make him look headless.  We’ll see. :)

Our daughter really wished that she could bring the Hulk with her to school today for show-and-tell.  A cool drawing is a close second though. :)

Frog Prince

For Lunch Bag Friday last week I alluded to one of my children trying to kiss a toad that week.  Well here's a pic I took of her going in for the kill. :) hahaha  Ok.  So I dared her with money.  I really didn't think she would do it.  It was hilarious (and a little queasy-making) being proved wrong- totally worth being poorer from the dare.  Too bad it didn't turn into a prince... not that I'm ready for any of my girls to fall in love.  lol  I actually pity the boy who takes our oldest out on her first date when she is 16+.  Seth is a very protective daddy.  lol

Seth drew this particular lunch sack in the spring of 2012.  I loved finding his lunch sack princess in the same position as our own princess in this photo. I just had to put them side-by-side.  :)

Drawing time with Daddy

Last night while Seth was drawing on the lunch sacks for Lunch Bag Friday our littlest decided she would draw on a lunch bag next to him (she does this from time-to-time).  Our oldest ended up joining in as well.  I thought this picture was too sweet not to share of them.  Here’s a pic this morning of all the bags together waiting to be grabbed by the girls.  Pip says her lunch bag is of “3 seals swimming in the water looking for fish”.   She’s so cute!  She used it today, but said that she was going to give it to her buddy at church on Sunday. :)

Pets or Pests?... depends on who you ask

Lunch Bag Friday! 9-6-13

I don’t know if your kids (if you have them) are like ours, but our kids are always trying to keep everything as a pet! Even spiders! I’m sure if they could sneak an elephant into the house they would.

Today our kitty had proudly placed a dead mole on our porch (she’s a good mouser and we live in the woods so it’s helpful). I was grossed out, then sad, because a little mole is so much cuter than a mouse. The first thing our littlest girl tried to do was run inside to get a tupperware to keep the dead mole as a pet! Needless to say I would’t let her. (such a mean mom) lol

Twice last week my kids caught frogs and once a toad and begged to keep them- one of them even kissed the toad to see if it would turn into a prince. EWWW!!

There have been many times that I have discovered dead roly poly bugs, ladybugs, or fireflies in Pip’s pockets when I am about to wash her pants. I’m terrified of finding something worse. lol

We don’t have a dog, but Seth and I both had dogs when we were kids and this is the way they waited for us after school. Actually our kitty waits like this for the kids and even runs partway to the bus stop in some places we’ve lived to greet them.  With the start of a new school year and having moved to a new school, Seth and I feel like this puppy everyday, anxious to hear their news and give them loves.

These bags are so charming.  I love them Seth!

Resolutions

Of all the lunch sacks my husband has drawn, this one represents the essence of my middle child the most!  :)  She is the sweetest, most inclusive, creative, caring girl in the world.  She loves to sew, draw, pretend, and create stories and plays for little kids.  Seth drew this on her lunch sack the first Friday of the new year (January 2013).  I love that her “new friends” are ones that she’s obviously sewn herself and the big imaginary friend behind her is enjoying her newest creations.
This lunch sack has been popping to my head lately because of the dozens of plays she has been creating and performing for us the past few days and so I thought it would be fun to share with the rest of you.  Time to go create something myself… (I promised a few months ago to sew something for a friend).

The Get Away!

Seth drew these lunch sacks this last spring.  Some of my favorite lunch sacks are like these where the sacks alone look awesome, but when you put the two sacks side-by-side they create an even better, more full picture or story.  I was looking at this particular set last night remembering a funny story about our kids…
Makenzie loves dragons! Always has… so anytime there is a dragon on a bag it automatically becomes hers. When Makenzie was in 4th grade she had been reading a lot of dragon books. One night, while we were driving in the car she very seriously told me that she needed to have a talk with me. She sounded almost scared, so I turned down the music and told her she had my full attention. She then began to explain that she felt she needed to warn me about something very serious… she could tell soon that she was going to morph into a dragon because when she swings high on the swings she could feel wings trying to burst out of her back and toe nails growing into claws inside her shoes. She wanted to warn me because she didn’t want me worried if she didn’t come home from school one day… it probably meant that she had completed morphing and was flying to join the other dragons. I couldn’t believe that she was in 4th grade and her imagination could be so strong that she truly believed this. It was so random and sincere I tried my best not to burst out laughing (…it was extremely difficult). Kendyl on the other hand didn’t try so hard (she was in 1st grade). She burst out laughing and said, “You don’t really think this do you? You haven’t told anyone else this, right? That would be soooo embarrassing!” Makenzie’s face was filled with confusion and I saw her little dragon heart break. It was the sweetest and saddest thing ever! Makenzie then decided that Kendyl was wrong and declared that just because Kendyl hadn’t seen dragons didn’t mean they weren’t real! Kendyl considered this and decided Makenzie might be right, but it would probably be a good idea not to talk to other kids about this just in case. Makenzie agreed. Oh my kids.

I love when Seth draws these sorts of things and memories come flooding back. Even though Makenzie doesn’t believe she will morph into a dragon anymore, she does still love them and would probably love to be a dragon for an afternoon. hahaha  These lunch sacks sometimes bring back memories and moments captured in time and help me hang on to them as we watch our family growing. They are gifts for me as much as they are gifts for our girls. Thank you Seth!
